Summerland is a beautiful town situated in the Okanagan Valley. Although small, Summerland is well-known for its historic steam railway, dozens of wineries, 2 cideries, and several beaches for a pleasurable life experience. The community lies between Penticton to the south and Peachland to the north. Summerland is famous for its winding roads, which passes a message of being careful while driving and doing things moderately without rush.

With a population of just over 11,000 inhabitants, this district is blessed with amazing weather, beautiful landscapes, and unique soil for fruit farming in the Valley. If you are looking for a region in Canada with a beautiful weather, Summerland is one to highly consider. Over 2,000 hours of beaming sunshine every year and not-too-hilly terrain to navigate the town. Indeed, it is a “small but mighty” town.

Although Summerland became an incorporated municipal in the year 1906, it has a history of settlement that is well beyond that year. The first inhabitants of Summerland were the Syilx. The name of this district used to be Trout Creek. According to history, Sir Thomas Shaughnessy bought a ranch (Baclay Ranch) in Trout Creek in 1902 and later formed what is today known as Summerland.

In terms of education, Summerland has some of the best elementary and secondary schools for kids. Although no post-secondary school is present in the small town, neighboring communities like Kelowna has The University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus and Kelowna College. If you need a private, full-time boarding, or day school for your kids, there are good schools to attend in Summerland.

The economy of Summerland largely depends on tourism and agriculture. Being situated along the Okanagan Lake, Summerland is home to some of the nicest beaches in Canada. Agriculture is also thriving, thanks to the land’s unique soil for fruits farming such as apricots, peaches, canneries, pears, and apples. Due to the presence of fruit farms scattered in the district, wineries have become the mainstay of Summerland. Summerland is known to have some of the best wineries in the world that serves both local and international markets.

Despite being located in a semi-arid region, Summerland has numerous golf courses to entertain golf lovers. If you’ve ever heard of the historic Kettle Valley Steam Railway, it is located at Summerland. Using the railway is one activity most tourists never fail to miss whenever they visit Summerland.

Apart from having golf courses, another famous sport Summerland is known for is ice hockey. The town has been home to famous hockey teams in Canada and there are different hockey leagues organized at various levels.

The climate of Summerland is referred to as humid continental, having cool winters, and hot, dry summers. Due to the location of Summerland, it is relatively warm at night when compared to other places like Penticton.

In terms of international relations, Summerland town is sister to Toyoko, Hokkaido, Japan, and Omak, Washington, USA.

Generally, Summerland is a beautiful, small town with a lot of tourist attractions. It has friendly inhabitants, which makes visiting worthwhile.
