Osoyoos Lake

Osoyoos Lake is the warmest lake in Canada and has become a popular spot for summer recreation and winter sporting events. Located in Osoyoos BC, and Washington state in the United States, the lake stretches 14 miles and it got its name from the word swiws (Okanagan Language) which means narrowing of the water.

About 17,000 years ago, a huge glacier during the Ice age gave birth to the Okanagan Valley. As the glacier retreated, its meltwaters gave rise to all the lakes in the Okanagan Valley including the Osoyoos Lake.

The lake has a system that starts Armstrong in northern Okanagan and is supplied by mountain snowpacks, and the flow continues through several lakes interconnected by the Okanagan River: From Kalamalka Lake, Okanagan, Vaseux, Skaha to Osoyoos Lake. The flow continues into the Okanagan River in the United States, to the Columbia River, and finally into the Pacific Ocean.

Osoyoos Lake has three basins – the South Basin, Central Basin, and North Basin. Of the three basins, the North Basin tends to be the deepest at 208 feet. Close to the United States border, it has a depth of 70 feet. The Osoyoos Lake State Park is situated on the shore of Osoyoos Lake.
