Are you trying to decide who to vote for this Federal Election?
You most likely have issues near and dear to you.
Consider researching each parties position on issues that are important to you and yours.
My issue….housing affordability.
Call me simple…but I am just going to throw this out there to get us started…
QUESTION – Wouldn’t the housing crisis be solved if we had more housing?
QUESTION – If we focused on creating housing policies that assisted more Canadians in getting into home ownership…
would that not solve the housing problem?
Policies such as revising the Mortgage Stress Test legislation to allow for 30 year amortization and more reasonable
Policies such as giving tax credits to homeowners for renovations and builders for building.
How about we don’t tax housing – like new housing. How are we going to make housing more affordable if the
government will not recognize that GST is a real impediment to home ownership and development.
How about if we had provincial policies with regard to annual rent increases that actually reflected the costs of owning property. If we made being a Landlord and investing in real estate more attractive… more people would do it…the more people who invest and create rental space…the more competition there is for Tenants…the more supply…rental rates should ease up.
What if the federal government developed a National Housing Strategy and worked with the provincial and municipal governments to standardize building codes, ease up on Development Permits, densify land use and remove barriers to creating housing. Why does it take weeks and months to get development approval? Is this not an obvious impediment to home ownership?
Does the federal, provincial and municipal governments not realize that their policies, even with good intentions (Mortgage Stress Test) that they often have unintended consequences…less people qualify, less people buying, now these potential homebuyers must rent which introduces new renters into an already saturated market.
We need less government not more.
