the New Year is often when we take stock of how we live and RESOLVE to live better.
Try these tips for living well in the New Year.
If you buy something new you must RESOLVE to rid yourself of the old. Decide as a family to be very selective about bringing something new into your home. Most of our efforts to stay tidy involve picking up things…and putting them in their place.
Decide less is more…go through your drawers, closets and pantries and dispose or recycle what you have not used this year. You have to be incredibly disciplined. Decide to get rid of those chubby clothes because….well you don’t want to be chubby. While we are on the subject of clothes…I tend to wear my favourite outfits and avoid the ones that are not my favourites…why do I have them again? Do you really need that melon scoop? When was the last time that you had time to scoop those little melon balls?
This is a perfect time of the year to take a look at your holiday decorations. If you didn’t use it this year…the odds are that you will not use it next so you might as well donate it now. Take a moment now to label your storage bins to make it easier to find what you are looking for this year.
A lot of organizing in a household has to do with schedules. We seem to be leading increasingly busier lives which often sucks the joy out of things.
RESOLVE to allow members of your family to only participate in 2 or 3 activities each. Cut down on trying to do it all in favour of being in the moment and deciding to commit to just a few things.
Take a moment to take stock of your finances. Are you financially fit? Do you have savings? Surprisingly a small monthly savings schedule adds up quickly. You should have long-term savings, short-term savings for repairs or maintenance that doesn’t fall within your monthly budget and vacation and education savings, if your family includes children. Have you taken a look at the terms of your mortgage lately? Consider making this the year that you utilize your lump sum payment options or that you go from monthly mortgage payments to bi-weekly accelerated. This small increase can significantly reduce the amount of interest that you pay over the years. Ask your lender to run the numbers for you.
Have you made yourself a priority? Often our needs including health (physical and emotional) get set aside in favour of the needs of others.
How are your going to steward the joy in your house if you are not feeling well or are stressed out? RESOLVE to do something physical each day. RESOLVE to get up 15 minutes earlier to meditate or plan out your day so that you are less stressed out.

I really used to hate spending my weekends cleaning so now I spread out my chores throughout the week.
Bathrooms on Monday, clean floors on Tuesday, take out the garbage on Wednesday, change Linens on Thursday, do my shopping on Friday, Special Projects on the Saturday after a well-earned slow start 😉

RESOLVE to make memories on Sunday with your family. Visit a new park, bike or hike in a new area, visit with friends and extended family, check out what is going on in your area and participate, take the kids to the library, make a holiday wreath, try a new recipe with everyone helping out, redecorate the kids room…it’s not about what you do or the money that you spend but rather the time.
